Systems of collection and feedback
It was felt that more training should be given to staff on how to use computer systems efficiently and more terminals should be available.
Consistent, timely, standardised, formatted and interpreted feedback was needed to reach all relevant parties at the same time, with pre-determined systems for taking action. A standard needed also to be established for the production and interpretation of information, with time built in so that exceptions could be investigated and explained.
It was seen that information production and analysis could be based around four foci: purchasing activity; internal service performance; staff turnover, recruitment and other issues; and a specific theme for the year. For the first three foci there should be a limited number of indicators.
The dissemination of aggregated information should follow a path through the department that engages the policy makers and professionals who need to see the data and can comment on it. The interpretation of information and subsequent action needed to feed into the planning process.
